27th July – 3rd August 2012 – Barry Arts Festival

Canolfan Porthceri Centre is organising and running the Barry Arts Festival in 2012. Dot has obtained funding from the Arts Council Wales for the event, and a varied programme of events is being planned. There will also be several “Fringe” events being organised and run as part of the festival. Look out for more details and check back here for more details.

4th May 2012 – Quiz Night

On 4th May 2012 Canolfan Porthceri Centre will be holding a fund-raising Quiz Night in the upstairs bar, Park Hotel, Park Crescent, Barry. Entry is £3 per person, the quiz starts at 7:30, and to honour the date, there will be a special “Star Wars” round.

Add it to your diary now, organise a team, and remember – May 4th be with you!


21st December 2011 – Military Wives’ Song

On 21st December Canolfan Porthceri Centre organised a half-day singing session.  The object of the event was to learn and record the lovely song “Wherever you are” and send it to Radio 2’s Chris Evans show as part of the programme’s call out to choirs across the country.

September – November 2011 – Three Talks on Tuesdays

Towards the end of 2011 Dot had the bright idea of a number of talks over a few months, on the broad theme of “Ideas and Idealism”. Speakers were arranged, but would you believe it? There was no suitable venue available within Barry for such things! So we hired a room at the St Andrews Golf Club and Got On With It!

27th-28th May 2011 – With/Together & Gift – AcouChristo

Chris Young is a Sound Artist and Musician working with found sounds and vocals. He has written a piece about community, money and creativity to be performed at the current Canolfan Porthceri Centre. The work formed part of his final year Masters project.

26th February 2011 – St David’s Day Fayre

Porthceri Centre opened its doors in time for spring when it held its St David’s Fayre on Saturday 26th February 2011. The Fayre was opened by Courtenay Hamilton, the current Miss Wales. As well as Courtenay, there were other attractions, including art and jewellery stalls, exhibitions of photographs and paintings, Barry Brass Band played, the Desert Divas danced, and Cadoxton Tae Kwon Do club… demonstrated!

6th – 11th December 2010 – Little Match Girl

PUKKA Productions performed their latest show, and became Porthceri’s first major production. See the PUKKA website at www.pukkaproductions.org.uk for a full report.


9th November 2010 – Voices of Partition : A Musical Journey

Another landmark event took place in the Porthceri Centre on Tuesday the 9th November at 8pm. The former Porthkerry Road Methodist Church was the venue for an event where Wales met the Indian subcontinent when Voices of Partition: a Musical Journey was performed by award-winning folk group Sild, poet and playwright Mazhar Tirmazi and the Sangat chorus from Barry and the Vale.

Faure RequiemSunday 5th September 2010 – Faure Requiem

Vale Voices presented the Faure Requiem and a programme of songs of hope and humanity, including “Somewhere over the Rainbow”, “Pam fod eira’n wyn” and the Chinese blessing song. The choir was supporting Save the Children through one of its members, Jane Clarke, who is doing a fund-raising walk in China in October. The Vale Chamber Orchestra, organist John Cheer, accompanist Emma Arscott and soloists Darcie Hamilton and Edward Rhys Harry were also performing.
